Building a Foundation

The Tequihua Foundation was established in April 2005.

In these past five years, The Tequihua Foundation has developed and matured into a much larger nonprofit organization, increasing its volunteer corps by five times, garnering the support of recognized community leaders via its Board and consultants, and achieving recognition and presence through its activities in the surrounding communities. In light of this significant growth and development, The Tequihua Foundation has been recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Public Charity.

The Foundation chose the name Tequihua because it means "builder" or "stone mason" in Nahuatl, the language of the ancient Central Valley of Mexico (and later all of indigenous Mesoamerica ). Our ancient predecessors understood themselves as builders in relation to the larger cosmos. Even their architecture took account of the movements of the heavenly bodies in relation to the Earth. The Toltec artisan or scientist thus also became strong as a reflection of the cosmic order.

We call ourselves Tequihua because we are building upon these ancient practices and knowledge to create something new as an organization and as individuals. Through arts events and empowerment classes that strike an ancient resonance yet communicate through modern culture, The Tequihua Foundation aids in the personal growth of participants and enriches the diverse communities with which it interacts.
